Puzzle games built for the daily commute

August 24, 2026 · Marek Novák

A commute puzzle game has a specific job: entertain you for a stop or two, survive a dropped signal, and never punish you for putting the phone down. Most games fail at least one of these.

The key traits are one-handed controls, instant restarts, and local saves. If a game makes you sit through a loading screen or an ad between every round, it fails the commute test. You want to be back in the puzzle within a second of unlocking your phone.

I lean toward games with soft or optional timers. Hard timers plus a bumpy tram equals frustration. Give me something I can pause the moment my stop arrives and pick up later exactly where I left off.

Try a few candidates during an actual commute rather than at home on wifi. The difference is bigger than you'd think, and it'll tell you fast which one earns a spot on your phone.
